Just a quick update to let everyone know that we’re doing alright. Ivan was considerably more devastating than we all expected, but the Lord protected us and our damage was minimal. Mainly, the wind blew our chimney off and our privacy fences down, and we have some water damage to our ceilings. Considering what happened to the beaches and other properties near the water, we were blessed. Currently we have phone and water service, and we are just waiting for power to be restored. I’ll update again after that happens and post some pictures at that time. Thanks for your prayers through all of this, we know they helped!

Things are finally starting to pick up a little. According to the weather bug we’re just now getting sustained winds at tropical storm speeds. It’s getting too dark outside to take any pictures, but we can hear the wind in the fireplace. The power has been flickering, too, so this will probably be my last post for the evening since I’m going to shut the computer down. I sure have been thankful for my new UPS, which has kept the computer up through it all. They’re saying that we can expect power to be out for up to two weeks if it does go out, so if we don’t have power tomorrow afternoon it may be awhile before I can post again. We’ll call our parents tomorrow afternoon or evening to let them know how things are going. Have a great night!

There’s actually not much to report on right now. The rain has been falling steadily, but not too hard, and the wind isn’t too bad. I was out in the back yard earlier to pick up a strip of aluminum from somebody else’s house, and though I was out in it for a couple minutes I didn’t get very wet. My neighbors were enjoying the weather out on their front porch as well.

It just started raining outside within the past hour, and we have a pretty steady breeze with gusts up to minimal tropical storm speeds. We’ve finished our final preparations, including taping up the north-facing windows (winds should be coming from the south, so the south-facing windows are boarded up), moving some furniture away from those northern windows, and filling the bathtubs with water. I can still hear people hammering outside.

I’ve taken a couple pictures, which you can see in the new Hurrican Ivan photo album. More to come, as we have power.

As many of you are probably aware, Hurricane Ivan is churning through the Gulf of Mexico toward the upper Gulf coast. The National Hurricane Center is predicting landfall early Thursday morning near the Alabama/Mississippi border, about 70 miles west of us. We’ll certainly be feeling the effects before then, though. We’re prepared: I boarded up all of the south-facing windows on our house and even reinforced the siding on our chimney to hopefully prevent the leaks that have plagued us since we moved in last June. We also have a ton of water and food, so we’re set if we can’t get out for a few days. Thankfully, we don’t live anywhere near the water, so we don’t need to evacuate. Read the rest of this entry

Technical Difficulties

Posted on

If you tried to access our site for the past few days, you may have noticed that it was down. According to our web host, some hackers got into their system and deleted a bunch of users’ directories, including ours. The good news is, I had a backup. The bad news is that it was from October. Fortunately, I had a more recent backup of the What’s Happening database, so we only lost 1 entry there. I’ve gotten most of the site restored and our email accounts are active again, but I’m still working on the Photo Albums. More later…

D+5 days…

Just wanted to let people know that our baby hasn’t come yet! Rachel was due Feb. 25, but now it looks like we’ll have two March birthdays. I was kind of hoping for a leap-year baby, as were most of the guys at work, but Rachel thought that would be one of the worst days to be born on, so she’s relieved. Expect an update and a whole bunch of pictures when the time finally comes (and maybe some video, too)! More then…

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! We hope everyone has had a fantastic and blessed holiday season! Ours started out with a large get-together of friends for Thanksgiving. Although our original plans had fallen through, we thank the Lord for good friends who were willing and glad to have us join them.

This was our first year to decorate our new home for Christmas. We were able to get a live Christmas tree, and we even had enough ornaments to fill it! Compared to some of our neighbors our outdoor lights were somewhat humble, but I always enjoyed rounding the corner of the street on my way home and seeing them ahead, lighting our house on the hill! It will be a little sad to take the decorations down, but we can still celebrate God’s gift to us, Jesus, all year round! Read the rest of this entry

Moved In

Just a quick update to let you know that we’re all still alive down here on the Gulf Coast!

The move went incredibly well. Grandma and Grandpa Heinrich and Mom and Dad Tuffs were able to visit us during the move, and helped out tremendously. We couldn’t have gotten so much done, especially in preparing the house (painting, carpet cleaning, etc.), without their help. And when the big moving day came, we were able to get the entire apartment moved in less than an hour and a half thanks to the help of a good-sized group of great friends!

Now we’re settled in, and we can hardly believe the summer is almost over! Melissa’s becoming more interactive; her new thing is helping Mommy take the laundry out of the dryer. She also does a good job at picking up her toys, though it does take a little prompting to get her to do it. She can be quite a ham at times, as you can see in the Picture of the Week.

By the way, if you don’t have our new address yet, just send us an email (you can click the link towards the bottom of the home page) and we’ll be glad to get it to you!

Site Update

Posted on

The site’s finally finished! At least, it’s back to normal, and the whole site looks correct. A bunch of pictures from Melissa’s birthday are in the Photo Albums, and I’m getting the few updates that we missed onto the What’s Happening page.

Speaking of what’s happening, the main reason I was able to do so much work on the site is because I’m on vacation this week. We decided to stay home for summer vacation this year because we’re in the process of buying a house, and that’s forced us to tighten our budget a little. The house purchase is going very well, though, and we’re excited about moving in next month. Our closing date is June 16, Lord willing, and we’ll keep you posted as things progress!
